Sex/Life TV Show Review - Hot & Bothered or Don't Even Bother

Let’s start at the beginning. What is Sex/Life about? Sex/Life is about Billie a mum of 2 who is married to investment banker Cooper Connelly. As she feels the lack of passion in her marriage Billie starts to fantasize and remember back to her old flame Brad Simon who she used to have some wild sex. She writes about their sex life in very hot vivid detail in her journal when one day her husband reads all about it. The show explores motherhood, relationships, and sexual desire.
The start of the story I think will be relatable to a lot of mothers out there. I am sure a lot feel invisible after having children and getting stuck into a routine where the excitement happens rarely if not ever. I also think when there are cracks or issues in relationships that people often think back to old boyfriends or girlfriends and remember the thrill and rush that they used to get from them. It does raise a question – is sex important to relationships? Would you stay with the perfect partner in every way except for boring sex life?

Let’s meet the main players in Sex/Life. The actors in the show are Sarah Shahi who plays Billie. Australian actor Adam Demos plays Brad, Mike Vogel plays Billie’s husband Cooper and Margaret Odette plays Sasha Snow Billie’s best friend. There are also reoccurring actors throughout the show but these 4 have really put themselves out there for the show.
The show contains ALOT of sex scenes. I mean it’s in the title, but there are heaps. They are also pretty graphic which is why this show is rated R. I have to commend the actors for some of these scenes as they look fully real! I did some googling to see if there were body doubles were used or if things actually happened however Adam Demos said that their sex scenes were rehearsed and planned out more than the other scenes and that all actors were made to feel comfortable and safe.
The show is run by women, written by mostly women, directed by all women so I feel like this is a first for TV to have this point of view from a female perspective and if we are honest most women think about sex just as much as men do. There is empowerment there and this show shows that it’s ok for women to want to have a great sex life and sexual experiences.
Moving away from the sex scenes and onto the story, it’s one of those stories I think some people may not understand as they have never been in a situation where they have questioned their relationship. For me, I don’t understand her husband’s response and actions to some things that happen in the show. His first response is to bang his wife over their kitchen table but then he is up and down and all over the place throughout the rest of the show. I also wonder with Billie as well, she is not the best communicator with her husband. However, if she just told her husband she wanted a hotter sex life and some more passion in their relationship there wouldn’t be much of a show now would there?

Our Final Thoughts...

While some of the dialogue is not the best writing in the world and parts of the story line are bit frustrating the show is not that bad. I mean I watched the whole thing in one hit so it certainly kept my attention. It’s one of those shows that if you are home alone and in the mood and not into porn this might be for you to help get the party started if you know what I mean 😉
